After projects inspired by the music of Bach, Mahler, Wagner, and Mozart, the great New York-based jazz pianist Uri Caine takes on Béla Bartók.
Uri Caine is an influential figure in the New York Jazz scene. Primarily known as a bandleader, Caine has also played with Dave Douglas, Don Byron, Clark Terry, Rashid Ali, Joe Henderson, J.J. Johnson, Lester Bowie, Freddie Hubbard, Arto Lindsay, Sam Rivers, and Woody Hermann. He plays drum and bass with his Bedrock Trio. Uri Caine interprets great composers like Mahler, Wagner, Mozart, and Bach with free and bold instrumentation. When listening to these interpretations it’s not usually the original that comes to mind but the new creation emerging from the conversation between Caine and the composer. Bartók has been a source of great inspiration for Caine and The Bartók Project was born out of thoughtful and dedicated preparation. His approach is based on the folk melodies and unison that Bartók himself adapted, giving The Bartók Project a number of rich levels of interpratation. Uri Caine will perform just one U.S. concert of this project, at Joe`s Pub in New York City. October 10 at 9:30pm.
