The second half of the 19th Century—a period of urbanization and democratization in Europe—saw in Hungary a curious revival of country house building. On February 20th, art historian and writer József Sisa talks about some of the issues connected with this phenomenon. Hungary’s semi-feudal social structure combined with a rising middle class, a diversity of style influenced by European models—all these factors contributed to a remarkable flourishing of country house building in Hungary.
