"It
would be great if by experiencing the Romani people and their music, people can
learn more about them and understand that - what you've believed about these
people has been a lie your entire life."
-- Johnny
Depp (interviewed in the film)
The Movie:
5 bands from 4
countries on a 6-weeks tour across America. Dazzling performances. Full
theaters. Backstage chaos. Giggles, tears and friendships. Poverty and a wedding
in Romania, a transvestite in Rajasthan, racism in California, political triumph
in Macedonia... it's all there.
Johnny Depp admires them, crowds flock
to sell out their shows, and one of the musicians just makes it home in time to
die among family. This rich feature documentary is a dramatic journey of highs
and lows, with raw powerful music, reflecting the harsh but triumphant history
of Romani people through the centuries.
GYPSY CARAVAN is a wild
celebration of the musical world of the Roma, juxtaposed to the real world they
live in. Luscious music interweaves with the stirring real life tales of the
artists' homes and families. Shot by documentary icon Albert Maysles, the film takes place on WMI's tour
across North America and in the artists' homes around the world.
Features performances by some of the top Gypsy musicians alive today:
Macedonian diva and "Queen of the Gypsies" ESMA
REDZEPOVA, traditional Indian folk troupe MAHARAJA, Romanian brass band FANFARE CIOCARLIA, the famous Romanian violin
wizards TARAF DE HAIDOUKS, and the Spanish
ANTONIO EL PIPA FLAMENCO Company from
Andalucia.
"The 'Buena Vista Social Club' for Gypsy
music.
It captures the spirit of an amazing musical culture and
the
heart of the musicians and singers who express it."

The Dedication:
GYPSY CARAVAN has screened this
month at festivals in Seattle, London, Krakow and Transilvania. It launched at
Tribeca and has been an award winner and festival favorite from San Francisco to
Nashville and Vancouver, and from Korea to Karlovy Vary.
Beyond the music and fun, we have seen a lot of strong reactions
at film festivals this past year, and it's clear that this film has enormous
potential to create change and launch critical dialogues around the world about
Roma. Even today the "Gypsy" stereotypes often overshadow the reality of Romani
people who are targets of systemic poverty, oppression, racism and abuse of
human rights. This film can nurture voices that are left unheard and support
those who are already trying to help individuals and families routinely living
with pain and suffering.
You can make a global
difference with a very small and simple first step: just come and enjoy watching
a film about great musicians. And slowly we will end up changing the negative
images in our minds and in the world.
This film is dedicated to
Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005 - 2015
An initiative of 8
governments, the UN, George Soros & the World Bank joining Roma communities
to fight poverty and discrimination, prioritizing education, employment, health
& housing.
