New Brunswick, NJ:   The Museum of the American Hungarian Foundation presents forty-six abstract paintings in an exhibition DOMJAN 100 - “Dynamic Color: Paintings By Joseph Domjan” from September 23, 2007 through March 1, 2008.   This exhibit is part of a series of events worldwide marking the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth.

Domjan’s paintings are virtually unknown, in spite of the fact that his prints are in the collections of more than 130 museums on four continents. Jewelry and  ornaments he designed have been sold by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Christmas cards bearing his motifs are offered by the Tate Gallery in London, but his paintings have rarely been seen.

Born in Hungary in 1907, Joseph Domjan came to America in 1957 and settled first in New Jersey and later in Tuxedo Park, New York where he built a home and studio. He was famous for his special printmaking technique which earned him the title” Master of the Color Woodcut”. Many of the collectors and institutions that purchased his very popular prints did not know  he also created brilliant paintings showing the same richness and luminosity of color as his woodcuts. He produced these non-figurative works from the late 1950s until shortly before his death in 1992. While a few examples have been show in retrospective exhibits, there has never before been an entire exhibit of these paintings.

Domjan’s  paintings were first created as pastels, later as oils. They are “color fantasies” so fresh and bold as to suggest an artist, who has just discovered color for the first time. While the same richness of color is present in his woodcuts, it is in the paintings that the “dynamic color” really has its chance to shine.

This exhibit is the last in the series of Domjan 100 events which have so far included exhibitions in Santa Cruz, California, Toronto, Canada, and a Centennial Symposium, exhibitions, and film showings in Budapest and Sárospatak, Hungary.
