The Kálmán Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Band, from Budapest, blends the folk music of Hungary and other parts of Central Europe with the riveting improvisations of jazz. Balogh, from a famous dynasty of Roma (Gypsy) musicians, is one of Hungary’s foremost cimbalom (hammered dulcimer) players. His ensemble features Frankie Látó, (violin); Ferenc Kovács (trumpet, violin), Peter Bede (saxophone), György Mihály (guitar), and Csaba Novák (bass). They are currently touring the country in celebration of the release of their new CD, Kálmán Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Band: Live in Germany, on Traditional Crossroads.
The program will also include three popular groups from the metropolitan area: the Csurdöngölo Folk Dance Ensemble, the Életfa Hungarian Folk Music Band, and the Talpra Magyar Hungarian Folk Dance Group. The folk dance ensembles will perform Gypsy dances from Orko, Transylvania, as well as the women's bottle dance and the couple's csárdás from Délalföld.
