September 14, 2006, at 7 pm: The
New Budapest Orpheum Society
performs "
Jewish Cabaret in Exile - Songs of Modernity" at the
YIVO Institute for Jewish Research at the Center for Jewish History (15 West
16th Street, NYC, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues).
Experience the musical tradition of the European Jewish cabaret which thrived
from the 1880's through the mid-20th century; from Eastern to Central Europe;
from the rural shtetl to the cosmopolitan ghetto. The New Budapest Orpheum
Society (NBOS), an eight-member ensemble, revives songs from these troupes while
also exploring the remarkable traditions created by composers and lyricists in
exile. Hauntingly beautiful songs are transformed into a new and compelling
history of the modern Jewish experience. The NBOS performances mix skits,
comedy, and songs in German, Hebrew, Yiddish and English with scholarly
commentary.
