Hungarian Gypsy Band Hubay Concert Ensemble to Perform at Hungarian Embassy in Washington DC on November 8 at 7pm

Hungarian Gypsy band Hubay Concert Ensemble gives a concert at the Embassy of Hungary on November 8th at 7pm performing Kodály, Weiner, Bartók, Liszt, Monti and Hubay pieces.

It was founded in 2005 in cooperation with Johan János, providing the opportunity for those who finished their studies in Rajkó’s music school, and wanted to achieve something more technically, to find their own paths by adapting gypsy music. The first step was the recording and releasing of a CD, which pointed out that these musicians are highly qualified, playing music by Hubay, Liszt and Kodály as well as music by Bach or Toselli. The band is interested in creating productions, which show that studying based on gypsy music results in a brand new sound. Hubay Concert Ensemble’s experimentation helps gypsy music and Hungarian folk music remain highly present in the 21st century.

The average age of the members of the band is 23. They include János Johan leading violinist, Krisztián Oláh on viola, László Ökrös on clarinet, Zoltán Ökrös on dulcimer, and József Ökrös on doublebass. As Hungarian “Ambassadors at large” they have represented Hungary’s gypsy and folk music culture in many countries. The band usually plays Hungarian folk music, folk dance, classical and gipsy music, and operetta mainly by Bartók, Liszt, Kodály, Hubay, and Bihari.
